Zakat Foundation of America youth volunteers have been busy this Fall tutoring elementary kids in Math & English at Al-Huda Academy in Durham, NC. They collectively spent 150 hours volunteering for the program.
ZF partnered with Al-Huda Academy in Durham, NC and offered an after-school Math/English Enrichment Program for 10 weeks. Youth Tutors Furkan, Yusuf, Huda, Aunindya & Aurindom tutored 3rd & 4th graders in Math.
The students were given the state Math practice test during the first week. For the next 7 weeks, the tutors then went over all the concepts they had problems with and used creative ways to explain the concepts to them. One of the students was having trouble understanding fractions. Yusuf found an easy and entertaining way to explain it to his 3rd grade student. "How many quarters are there in a football game? If one quarter is over, what fraction of the game is left? He didn't have trouble understanding fractions after that.
Freshman UNC Chapel Hill Student Nur Kose taught English to 5th graders in the ZF Afterschool program.
In the beginning of the tutoring session, one of the kids was pretty upset to be there after a whole day of school. Few weeks afterwards we noticed he was actually enjoying doing his work. We asked Aurindom, his tutor, how had he accomplished that. "Oh, all you have to do is tell him a few jokes at the beginning of the session, and he starts laughing and doing his work."
The following graph illustrates their improvement after they they took another practice test in the 9th week of the session.
At the end of the 10 weeks, ZF NE Director Murat Kose talked to the parents of the afterschool program about ZF and the organization's work in 40 countries. He discussed how ZF has been a leading organization in encouraging and helping youth including orphans and refugees to get an education to have a better life for themselves and their families. He also gave a certificate of achievement to all the kids who completed the 10 week session.
Principal Zainab Abdul-Qaabidh praised the ZF volunteers and thanked them for not only helping the youth with their math skills but for also providing the younger kids with good models to follow. She presented the 6 volunteers with a certificate from Al-Huda Academy & a gift.
Zakat Foundation of America thanks Al-Huda Academy and the Principal for encouraging our volunteers and for providing a place for ZF's Educational program. They plan on having another program in the Spring of 2016 inshallah.
Youth Mentor Huda made cupcakes and a cake for the kids to celebrate their completion of the ZF Educational program.
ZF believes our youth mentors have a great deal to give to others and we have confidence that they are capable of doing amazing things to make our world a better place.
